Progress in Magnetosphere Modeling at the CCMC
Abstract
The global magnetosphere modeling suite at the Community Coordinateed Modeling Center (CCMC) has seen major improvements and reached several milestones during the year of 2018: The SWMF model has been upgraded to version 2018/05/25 and request runs can include magnetic perturbations on a grid of positions on the ground. For all other models of the magnetosphere, CalcDeltaB is available for run-on-request and generates magnetic perturbations on individual stations and gridded positions on the ground. The RECONX tool that detects boundaries between magnetic topologies (separators, separatrix, magnetic nulls) in the dayside magnetosphere has been optimized to facilitate more post-processing requests. The online visualization at the CCMC now offers the option to generate oblique cuts through the 3D magnetosphere outputs.Users can specify a normal vector of the cut plane and an offset from the origin of the coordinate system or select a local time (rotation angle around the Z-axis) of the cut plane. Cut planes can be rendered in either of the three geocentric coordinate systems used by global magnetosphere models (SM, GSM GSE).This facilitates comparisons between models. The new visualization capabilities have advanced the analysis of the ULF wave modeling challenge.
