Strategies from the Front Lines of Linking Science with Action
Abstract
The Science Policy Exchange (SPE) was established by six universities and research institutions in the northeastern U.S. in 2011 to increase the influence of science on policy decisions related to the environment and human health. Together SPE leaders have designed and implemented a dozen projects to link knowledge with action through two-way exchange, policy-relevant synthesis, and science communication. This presentation will distill insights that flow from three real-world examples of moving science into action based on 20 years of successful boundary-spanning programs (including what not to do). The diverse examples are forest pests and international trade; mercury releases and air quality policy; and greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and climate policy. All three combined horizon scanning, publication of highly cited papers, training for scientists, and proactive strategies for policymaker engagement. Each example reflects the collaborative efforts of an interdisciplinary team of scientists, boundary-spanning practitioners, and communication professionals. Attendees will learn actionable strategies for achieving impact with science using strategies that are tuned to the goals of participating scientists and designed to achieve credibility, saliency, and legitimacy with policy audiences.
