Ocean-Sea Ice Coupled Three Dimensional Variational Global Ocean Data Assimilation at National Centers for Environmental Prediction.
Abstract
Hindcasts for ocean and ice were produced for a 1/12° model configuration with HYCOM+CICE using the NCEP setup and version of the 3D-Var Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation system (NCODA). This work is part of an effort for producing real time operational daily analyses at NCEP, with NCEP atmospheric forcing. A simulation over many months was done with the objective of assessing the evolution of the circulation. Methods for incorporation of increments were examined and parameters were tuned to improve the assimilation of the data. Results, errors, and statistics for the assimilation will be presented. The resulting ocean state and its evolution will be discussed. A webpage, containing Python based visualization tool, is being designed to display the results, errors and statistics from the assimilation. A sneak preview of the webpage will be presented.
