The DCO Data Portal: Trials and Tribulations in the Implementation of International Community Recommendations
Abstract
The Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) Data Portal (https://info.deepcarbon.net/vivo/) is a living resource that has accompanied the Deep Carbon Observatory, a decade-long scientific research project. The Portal has provided a platform for researchers and professionals, from varied disciplines, with an interest in studying Carbon in Earth to share knowledge, access resources, discover publications and datasets, and promote their science. To facilitate these activities the data portal was designed and built using standardized and extensible open-source technologies incorporating best practices from the field of data management. It acts as a curated source of information about people, projects, publications, and other things related to the DCO community. In addition, it acts as a data repository where datasets submitted by researchers are assigned DCO-specific persistent identifiers (DCO-IDs) with links to the authors, journal, etc.
The DCO Data Science Team (https://deepcarbon.net/content/data-science-team) has been undertaking efforts to further develop the data portal with the aim of increasing the granularity and coverage of the information being stored while making it more accessible and available in a useful form. To that end the team has been exploring the means to place the DCO Data Portal capabilities in the context of the international data community. The team is evaluating the implementation of several PID-based recommendations published by various working groups of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) that cover areas such as the citation of dynamic data, the exchange of scholarly links, and ensuring the interoperability of data registries. While each of these recommendations addresses a particular problem, in concert they aim to reduce ambiguity and expose relationships in the data. With that, researchers are able to answer questions like, which datasets have been used in certain publications? Or, which field studies are certain scientists and organizations involved with? The presentation discusses an assessment of these recommendations, including an update on implementation efforts as well as lessons learned.- Publication:
