Ready Accessibility to an International Network of Seismic Data Repositories
Abstract
IRIS Data Management Center (DMC) is a certified trusted repository of ICSU World Data System and has been a steward of public access to a global array of seismological data for more than a quarter century. Recognizing the role that other national and international data centers in the International Federation of Digital Seismic Networks (FDSN) play in providing enhanced collections of data that are found nowhere else, IRIS forged a cooperative development and deployment program with data centers around the world to create a network of always-available seismic data and metadata services using established standards of online interfaces and data delivery.
The outcome of this project is a federation of almost 20 participants that freely provide their data through FDSN-standard web services.1 A catalog of holdings is maintained at IRIS DMC that maps the data provided at each center, allowing for services that let scientists discover an expansive list of seismic data that IRIS DMC alone cannot provide, but a combined, federated system can. Data can be explored using search engines and tools, not just based on where the instrument is sited, but the data center at which it can be found. Standard web service interfaces make it simple to collect distributed data in a unified fashion using standard techniques and the job of serving the exploratory scientist becomes a shared endeavor. This presentation will show the fundamental features of the federation of FDSN web services, the techniques for accessing data from a network of data repositories, and the tools that enhance data discovery, selection, and dissemination. - http://www.fdsn.org/webservices/datacenters/- Publication:
