SPASE Enhancements, Endorsements and Connectivity to DOI and ORDID
Abstract
The Space Physics Archive Search and Extract (SPASE) metadata standard had its initial release in 2005. Since then many improvements and enhancements have been made to the metadata standard. Most recently support to connect to DOIs issued to data collections and use of ORCIDs associated with people have been included in the standard. Also, at the recent COSPAR meeting the Panel on Space Weather passed a recommended resolution endorsing SPASE as the preferred metadata standard for space physics and space weather data. The resolution also encourages agencies to fund activities related to metadata generation to enhance the access and sharing of data. The COSPAR is now considering the resolution for full organizational endorsement. To date there are 11 organizations with over 4,000 data collections described with SPASE metadata. In addition, 1,885 Observatories, 2,268 Instruments, 4,904 Persons, 147 Repositories and 15 Services have been described with SPASE metadata. There is also an effort to establish an International Heliophysics Data Environment (IHDE) and SPASE will be considered as one of its enabling technologies. We present the current state of the SPASE metadata standard and related activities in the greater Heliophysics Data Environment.
