O3 profile comparison using ozonesonde and limb-viewing satellite measurements at the Jangbogo station, Antarctica
Abstract
Ozone profile observations using satellite have been performed to monitor the ozone depletion over Antarctica. Limb-viewing technique is appropriate to examine the stratosphere, where ozone depletion is mainly occurred. Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on Aura and Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) on Suomi-NPP retrieve ozone vertical profile by this technique. Comparison with in-situ ozonesonde measurements provide a number of useful information to validate and improve these data, enabling more reliable analysis using the limb-viewing observations. In this study, we conduct the inter-comparison of vertical ozone profile obtained from the ozonesonde, MLS, and OMPS measurements over the Jangbogo station (164.23°E, 74.62°S). Since 2015, Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) has launched ozonesondes (Electrochemical Concentration Cell) at the Jangbogo station, mostly concentrated in the austral spring (from September to November) when the stratospheric ozone is depleted. We use 100 ozonesonde measurements during this season from 2015 to 2017. For the comparison with MLS (ML2O3) and OMPS limb profiler (LP) observations, ozonesonde profiles are convolved using a priori and averaging kernels to have an equal vertical resolution with satellite measurements. Ozonesonde and satellite measurements are generally similar each other, but some discrepancy is found due to the different reflection of ozone variability which strongly depends on potential vorticity (PV). Since the effect of polar vortex is usually intensified in the austral spring, the differences between ozonesonde and satellite measurements in this season should be carefully considered for exactly examining the spatiotemporal changes of Antarctic ozone hole.
