Characteristics of Aerosol, Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) Concentrations and the Relationship between CCN Activity and Meteorological Parameters Measured over the Yellow Sea on a Meteorological Research Vessel, GISANG 1
Abstract
Measurements of aerosols and CCN have been performed in various regions around the world to understand physical and chemical properties of aerosols and CCN as well as their effect on climate such as mitigating the greenhouse effect. However, measurements in East Asia, especially for maritime environment, are relatively scarce compared to other regions. Understandably maritime measurements are more difficult than ground measurements because of the difficulty in finding a proper platform (i.e., research vessel). During the YEllow Sea - Air Quality campaign in 2018 (17 April - 8 June) (YES-AQ 2018), we had the opportunity to measure maritime air quality over the Yellow Sea. Because the Yellow Sea is located between the Chinese continent and the Korean peninsula, this is a good place to study aerosol properties affected by anthropogenic sources from China and Korea.
Presented in this study are maritime aerosol properties measured on board the meteorological research vessel, GISANG 1, over the Korean sector of the Yellow Sea during the YES-AQ 2018 campaign. Aerosols and CCN number concentrations, aerosol size distribution and chemical composition were measured by condensation particle counter (CPC), cloud condensation nuclei counter (CCNC), scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) and aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS), respectively. The average of total number concentrations of particles larger than 10 nm diameter (NCN) is 5772±4993 cm-3, CCN concentration at 0.6% supersaturation (N0.6%)is 3511±2418 cm-3 and N0.6%/NCN ratio is 0.74±0.19, which are somewhat higher than previous measurements in the same region in 2014 and 2015. Detailed analysis will be shown at the conference.- Publication:
