The X-ray Population of the High Star Formation Rate Colliding Galaxies in Arp 142
Abstract
We propose to continue our fruitful investigation into the link between local star formation rate (SFR) and the production of highly luminous X-ray sources in interacting and colliding galaxies with an observation of Arp 142. The galaxies in Arp 142 are clearly interacting, with one of them being dramatically tidally sheared by the other. The star formation regions in the sheared galaxy are striking. Arp 142 has one of the highest inferred SFRs in a galaxy that is close enough to easily study its ULX population with Chandra, and we expect to detect 12 to 25 ULXs in our proposed observation. In addition to probing the high end of the ULX-SFR relation, our proposed Chandra observation will help us understand this very complex and highly tidally ripped galaxy.
