Alpha Monocerotids 2017
Abstract
P. Jenniskens, SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center; and M. Odeh, International Astronomical Center, Abu Dhabi, report that the United Arab Emirates Astronomical Camera Network detected a brief episode of meteor- shower activity from the alpha Monocerotids (IAU shower 246) around Nov. 21d21h35m UTC. Between Nov. 21d18h30m and 22d02h UT, a total of 127 meteors were triangulated from low-light video camera observations, ten of which had a median radiant at R.A. = 117.0 +/- 0.6 deg, Dec. = +1.0 +/- 0.3 deg deg (equinox J2000.0), and entry velocity 62.6 +/- 0.9 km/s. Of these, eight appeared in the 28-minute interval between 21h22m and 21h50m UTC, and two later at 23h00m41s and 23h45m29s UTC. Peak visual magnitudes were +1 (three meteors), +2 (four), and +3 (one).
