Investigating the source of Electron Cyclotron Harmonic emissions observed in the Radiation belts
Abstract
Observations from the EMFISIS instrument suite on the Van Allen probes has shown occasional regions of Electron Cyclotron harmonic emission in the 100-500kHz range along the boundary of the plasmasphere. The source of these emission is under investigation as a possible mechanism for energy loss in the radiation belt. These emissions have resonance similarities to other wave emissions known to be produced by the relativistic cyclotron maser. This study investigates the matching conditions for the relativistic cyclotron maser as the source of wave growth, and identifying the electron population that may be providing the energy.
