Possible mechanism of diffuse aurora generation during BICI waves
Abstract
Recently, multi-point THEMIS observations at different locations with respect to the neutral sheet have indicated signatures of Ballooning/InterChange Instability (BICI) waves around 10 Earth radii downtail. For a number of THEMIS events with BICI signatures good All-Sky Imager (ASI) observations are available near THEMIS probes footprints. The ASI data exhibit a rich diffuse auroral dynamics during the events. Here, we use high-resolution electromagnetic THEMIS data and analytical diffusion coefficient estimates to investigate possible effects of the simultaneously observed electromagnetic waves on particle precipitation into the loss cone.
