Preliminary calibration results from a simple Wave/Particle correlator instrument that combines data from SPP/SWEAP and FIELDS
Abstract
One goal of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Mission is to understand themicrophysics of the interplay between Fields and Particles. The FIELDS and Solar WindElectron Alpha and Proton (SWEAP) Teams collaborated to implement a low resource(cost, mass and power) wave/particle correlator experiment that can correlatethe arrival time of either electrons or ions detected by the SWEAP ElectrostaticAnalyzers with the Electric or Magnetic FIELDS measurements with an accuracy of0.5 microseconds. Correlations, if detected, could potentially help identify therelevant wave modes and even determine the direction of energy transfer betweenwaves and particles. We will explain the principle of operation of thismeasurement and show results of its usage under laboratory conditions.
