Progress and analyses on single-footprint retrievals from cloudy AIRS spectra
Abstract
Progress in development of a single-footprint, optimal estimation retrieval for the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder is presented. The AIRS-OE algorithm retrieves atmospheric temperature, water vapor and cloud properties directly from AIRS L1b infrared spectra. Cloudy scenes are retrieved using a scattering forward model, with coincident MODIS cloud observations for cloud a priori. As co-located microwave data are not used, retrievals can not be made below thick clouds. However, the AIRS horizontal resolution is improved from 45 km to 14 km at nadir. We present results for a variance scaling study of temperature and water vapor, where this improvement in resolution reduces the lowest scale analyzed to half a degree.
