Monitoring of the Cen A jet and LMXB population
Abstract
We propose 2x5 ks observations of the nearby early-type galaxy Centaurus A spaced 6 months apart to monitor the X-ray fluxes of the inner jet knots and the ULX population. Our goal is to monitor the inner jet for flares and other transient events similar to what has been seen in HST-! in the M87 jet. Cen A is the nearest AGN jet, and due to its proximity it is the only jet in which Chandra s angular resolution probes the acceleration and radiative loss scales of the jet knots. We will also monitor the bright end of the LMXB luminosity function and the ULX population to constrain the long term temporal evolution of these sources.
