HETG Spectroscopy of the Ultra-Luminous X-ray Source NGC 1313 X-1
Abstract
XMM-Newton studies of a number of Ultra-Luminous X-ray (ULX) sources have revealed in EPIC-PN spectra residuals in the 1 keV region that were hypothesized to be due to plasma emission and/or wind absorption features. Further archival studies of XMM-RGS spectra of one of these sources, NGC 1313 X-1, bears out this hypothesis, revealing emission features with essentially zero velocity and absorption features with a rather remarkable 0.2c outflow velocity. XMM-RGS observations, however, lack the resolution to fully resolve these lines and provide the most sensitive measures of their parameters. Here we propose a 500 ksec Chandra-HETGS observation to provide the most accurate measure of the line properties in this ULX source.
