Molecular phylogeny and evolution of internal fertilization in South American seasonal cynopoeciline killifishes
Abstract
The first molecular phylogeny of cynopoeciline killifishes is presented. Synapomorphies related to insemination are inferred to reveal character evolution. Multi-gene phylogeny corroborates morphological data. Internal insemination arose a single time in aplocheiloid killifishes. Anal-fin and genital mussel specialisations arose before bone structural shifts.
