How the IMF By induces a By component on closed field lines during northward IMF Bz
Abstract
Using the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry global magnetohydrodynamics model we study the effects of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By component on the coupling between the solar wind and magnetosphere-ionosphere system during northward IMF Bz. Statistical studies in the inner magnetosphere has revealed that a local By component gets induced during such conditions. The magnitude of the induced By is also shown to be stronger compared to similar solar wind conditions with IMF Bz southward. Using MHD simulations we study the influence of northward IMF Bz and IMF By on the magnetospheric convection. We describe the dynamical process in which tension force on the newly reconnected field lines redistribute the open flux asymmetrically between the two hemispheres, and leads to restoring shear flows that affects closed field lines in the inner magnetosphere.
