Persistent Nighttime Lights Products Using the VIIRS Day/Night Band
Abstract
A global map of persistent nighttime lights sources for 2015 has been created using data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day/Night Band (VIIRS-DNB). This new product reveals patterns of economic activity, population, and can serve as a baseline of nighttime lights sources for use in change detection. This paper will describe the methodology for creating this global map of nighttime lights, the timeline for creating similar products for 2012-2014, and a brief comparison of this product generated with the VIIRS-DNB to products made with its predecessor sensor, the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS).
