Out of the SHADOZ: A Glimpse into the Realm of Ozonesonde Reprocessing
Abstract
The Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes (SHADOZ) program has archived ozone and radiosonde P-T-U profiles since 1998 from over a dozen tropical stations. Over time, variations in instrumentation and preparation procedures have necessitated reprocessing to reduce biases and inhomogeneities within station records. Recent advances in reprocessing methods and post processing software capabilities have motivated the SHADOZ community to reprocess their data records. Results of reprocessing vary from station to station because of unique operating procedures, data processing software, and metadata reporting. Here, we present the challenges faced in reprocessing historic SHADOZ data records from several tropical sites. The degree to which reprocessing can be done is hampered by the metadata reporting and missing data variables required in the ozone calculation. We discuss how we resolve these issues and show preliminary first estimates of ozone uncertainty in the reprocessed SHADOZ records.
