Anomalous QBO Behavior in 2016 Observed in Tropical Stratospheric Temperatures and Ozone
Abstract
During 2016 an unprecedented disruption of the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) occurred, when an easterly jet formed within the westerly QBO phase in the tropical lower stratosphere. This behavior has not been observed in the previous observational record (extending back to the 1950's). We will evaluate the corresponding anomalous behavior in tropical stratospheric temperatures and ozone, based on satellite and balloon-based observations.
