An Integrated Calibration Strategy for OMPS Level 1 products from Suomi NPP with Links to the EOS Aura Data Record
Abstract
We present an integrated approach to calibrate and maintain the Level 1 radiance data products from the Suomi NPP Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite. Our calibration strategy takes advantage of synergy between the limb and the two nadir UV-VIS instruments flying on the S-NPP platform. We discuss the basic concept of using the OMPS Limb Profiler (LP) measurements to calibrate OMPS Nadir Profiler (NP) radiances below 310 nm, which are highly sensitive to ozone absorption. The LP ozone algorithm uses altitude normalized radiances which are not affected by instrument degradation and does not require solar irradiance measurement, making it relatively self-calibrating. Once calibrated, the OMPS NP wavelengths below 310 nm can be used to retrieve accurate total ozone, which can then be used to calibrate OMPS Nadir Mapper radiances at longer, less ozone sensitive wavelengths. OMPS LP can be calibrated against EOS Aura MLS by calculating UV-VIS radiances from MLS ozone profiles and adjusting LP for consistency. Finally, we present our approach as a general strategy to inter-calibrate S-NPP OMPS with the other nadir UV spectrometers on NOAA POES, Aura, NPP, and JPSS-1, as well as European sensors (GOME, SCIAMACHY, and TropOMI) and the geostationary platforms (TEMPO, GEMS, and Sentinel-4). Our aim is to establish S-NPP OMPS as a calibration flagship for ozone sensitive Level 1 data products of the past and future.
