Observations of shallow mixed phase convective clouds in the southern ocean.
Abstract
During March and April 2016 the Capricorn project collected a unique data set characterizing clouds, aerosols, and precipitation during a five-week voyage aboard the Australian RV Investigator. Measurements included Millimeter and centimeter vertically pointing radar, Raman lidar, passive microwave, surface fluxes, and extensive aerosol instrumentation. Six major synoptic scale events were sampled each of which became stronger with the advancing season and each included mixed phase convective clouds in the post frontal cold air. In this paper we describe the dataset by examine the frequency of occurrence of various cloud types and how they correlate with large scale atmospheric and local oceanographic forcing.
