Using the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) for Stellar Physics Studies
Abstract
The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is currently implementing the programs awarded time in its third full observing cycle. Operating in the 1--240 micron wavelength region with its current suite of IR instruments, SOFIA offers the capability for imaging, polarimetric, and spectroscopic studies of a wide range of objects relevant to our understanding of the dust production and chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium by stars. We will review the scientific results obtained by SOFIA in these areas of interest. We will then describe the capabilities of the observatory and briefly outline the procedure for applying for observing time on SOFIA via the proposal calls, which are open to the worldwide astronomical community.
