Abstract
As first announced on CBET 4079, K. Nishiyama (Kurume, Japan) and F. Kabashima (Miyaki, Japan) reported their discovery of a possible nova (mag 10.9) in Sgr on unfiltered CCD frames (limiting mag 13.3) taken around Feb. 12.878 UT using a 105-mm f/4 camera lens; confirming frames (limiting mag 16.6) taken around Feb. 12.891 using a 0.40-m reflector show that the variable is located at R.A. = 18h14m25s.14, Decl. = -25o54'34".3 (equinox 2000.0). A pre-discovery image identified by T. Kojima, Gunma-ken, Japan, with a digital camera (+ 150-mm-f.l. f/2.8 lens) from Feb. 11.841 shows the variable at mag 10.5. The star reached visual mag about 9 in mid-February. Spectroscopy obtained by F. M. Walter (as above) shows that the variable is an "Fe II"-type nova with fairly narrow, boxy emission lines and low-velocity absorption systems. Further details are given on CBET 4079.
