Characterization of hard X-ray selected binaries:a census of magnetic CVs%
Abstract
A large number of hard X-ray galactic sources are detected in the INTEGRALand Swift surveys, among them ~20percent are accreting white dwarf (WD)binaries (CVs). The majority harbours asynchronously rotating magneticprimaries, which nowdays are disputed to be the dominant galacticpopulation of low-luminosity X-ray sources. While optical follow-upsallow to find magnetic CV candidates,a secure identification of theirtrue nature resides in the X-rays. With XMM-Newton we could successfullyprove or disprove the magnetic nature for 24 sources. We here proposeto continue our identification programme with 8 new candidates with theultimate goal to obtain a true census of the first volume-limited sampleof hard X-ray CVs.
