Classification of the cormorants of the world
Abstract
We sequenced over 8000bp of mt and nu DNA in order to estimate the phylogeny of the world's cormorants and shags. Our tree contained 7 well-supported clades, which we treat as genera. Our genera differ significantly from those proposed previously on morphological grounds. The biogeography implied by our phylogeny is more plausible than that from previous taxonomies.
