Fishing for justice: Human rights, development, and fisheries sector reform
Abstract
We review case law and documentation of human rights issues in fishing communities. Cases address forced eviction, detention, child labour, forced labour, and gender-based violence. Human rights violations undermine attempts to reform developing country fisheries. India, the Philippines, Cambodia, and South Africa illustrate rights advocacy in policy reform. We outline implications for NGOs, international institutions, and state agencies.
