Hydrogen burning on massive binary white dwarfs: what we know from the observations
Abstract
The explosive properties of hydrogen burning are known since the pioneering work of Schatzman (e.g. see 1946, 1948a and 1948b). Although Schatzman proposed that white dwarfs (hereafter WD) were the progenitors of both novae (Schatzman 1949) and type Ia supernovae (hereafter SNe Ia; Schatzman 1948a), the nova model was somewhat easier to conceive and was developed earlier that the SN Ia models, which are also based on close, interacting white dwarf binary systems.
