Strong Interstellar Field: Structure of the Heliosphere and Production of the Energetic Neutral Atoms
Abstract
We present solutions of the MHD equations for the heliosphere in the case of strong (above 8 microgauss) interstellar magnetic field and the associated production of the energetic neutral atoms (ENA). To our knowledge this is the first numerical study of the heliosphere and the ENA production for the strong field case. The plasma flow is concentrated in two streams, similarly to the classic solution by Parker. The plasma stream directions are shifted by a small angle from the directions parallel and antiparallel to the interstellar field. The distribution of the ENA flux reflects this structure, but is very sensitive to model details. We also estimate the effects of different ion transport processes on the energetic ion distributions and the ENA flux.
