Addressing the needs of Latent Heating Retrieval for PMM
Abstract
Latent heating (LH) is a principal source of atmospheric diabatic heating, and its distribution has a strong influence on the atmosphere. In response, several LH retrieval algorithms were developed for use with TRMM data, including the Convective-Stratiform Heating (CSH) algorithm. At the 3rd Precipitation Measurement Missions (PMM) LH workshop, the performance of the current TRMM LH algorithms were discussed as well as potential improvements to the current algorithms and the requirements for future products in preparation for the upcoming GPM mission, which will encompass higher latitude precipitation systems. Along these lines, potential improvements to the CSH algorithm's current database is evaluated as well as its application to higher latitude events.
