Aerosol Effective Height Retrieval from OMI adopting VLIDORT
Abstract
The change for slant column density (SCD) of oxygen-dimer (O4) at 477 nm is highly correlated to the variation of aerosol effective height (AEH). From the error analysis, the total error budget for the AEH retrieval is estimated to be 25% and 55% for absorbing and scattering aerosol, respectively, except the error due to the change of vertical distribution of aerosol. In this study, radiance spectrum is simulated by the vector-based radiative transfer model, VLIDORT, from UV to visible range, and we develop the retrieval algorithm for AEH from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). To develop the look-up table (LUT), the vertical distribution and the optical properties of aerosols are quantified using the long-term observation database. Furthermore, the spectral variation of surface reflectance is also considered to the LUT calculation. After determination of AOD and its types from OMI, we retrieve the AEH from the satellite over ocean surface.
