Spatial and Temporal Biases in ACOS-GOSAT and BESD-SCIAMACHY Carbon Dioxide and Effects on Flux Estimates
Abstract
Biases in satellite CO2 estimates can create artificial spatial and temporal variations in flux estimates. We apply biases characterized by the NASA Earth Science Data Record CO2 collaboration for ACOS-GOSAT and BESD-SCIAMACHY to a variational carbon data assimilation method to determine the systematic effects of these biases on flux estimates. TCCON observations, extended beyond TCCON locations using the CarbonTracker model, are used to estimate both biases and errors. The fluxes resulting from the estimated biases provide important constraints on the accuracy of flux estimates from these satellite observations.
