Characterization of hard X-ray selected binaries: a census of magnetic CVs
Abstract
Among hard X-ray galactic sources detected by the INTEGRAL and Swift surveys those identified as white dwarf binaries (CVs) recently boosted in number. The majority harbour asynchronously rotating magnetic primaries, suggesting that this subclass could be an important constituent of X-ray binary populations. XMM-Newton demonstrated its unique potential to unambiguously infer their true nature through the detection of X-ray spin pulses and the study of broad-band spectra, that proved to be successful for more than 17 targets. We propose to continue our identification programme with 5 new candidates, 2 of them already approved (C priority) in AO11 but not observed yet, with the ultimate goal to obtain a true census of the first volume-limited sample of hard X-ray emitting white dwarf systems.
