Longterm Monitoring of the Jet in Centaurus A
Abstract
We propose 2x5 ks monitoring observations of Centaurus A separated by six months to study the temporal variability of the jet. The scientific goals of this program are two fold. We will monitor the jet for flares in the knots of the jet. Given that the synchrotron loss time is spatial resolvable with Chandra at the distance of Cen A, we will be able to study the spatial/temporal variation in such a flare to constrain models of particle acceleration and gain insight into the underlying jet dynamics. Additionally, these two observation will provide data points in our longterm monitoring of smaller scale flux variations in the jet knots. We will also obtain a snapshot of the brightest X-ray binaries and search of ULX transients.
