Citation for presentation of the 2008 Alfred Treibs award to Martin Schoell
Abstract
It gives me great pleasure to introduce Martin Schoell as the 2008 recipient of the Geochemical Society's highest award in organic geochemistry. Since 1979, the Alfred Treibs Award has been presented 23 times for major achievements, over a period of years, in organic geochemistry. Martin's pioneering in stable isotopic characterization of sedimentary organic matter, especially of natural gas and petroleum systems, continues to have a profound impact on exploration for fossil fuels. The knowledge of isotopic differences among methane species of different microbiological and thermogenic origins is not only key to gas exploration but is these days of paramount importance for tracing this potent greenhouse gas to its sources. Martin's fundamental insight is the bedrock upon which subsequent studies are building.
