Periodic arrays of noncontacting noble-metal nanoparticles are of interest as nanoscale light-guiding structures, as metamaterials, as well as for a number of sensing applications. We review of recent work on the theoretical understanding of the electromagnetics of such structures on the basis of elementary electromagnetics, with a focus on their light-guiding properties. Also covered are applications for these structures despite the substantial losses. These applications include plasmonic nano-lasers and the prospect of negative-index effects.
