Calibration of space-bourne radar altimeters with tide gauge records and high resolution model runs
Abstract
This work considers the calibration of satellite radar altimeters (Topex/Poseidon, Jason 1 & Jason 2) with tide gauge records in order to improve their accuracy to within the range necessary to global scale sea level rise. It somewhat successfully to replicates the results of Mitchum 1994 & 1998 which use the technique of creating time series comprised of the difference between the altimetry and tide gauge series and combining them via a weighted least squares approach to estimate the "drift" of the space bourne altimeter. It furthers the research by coupling these results with a high-resolution run of the Community Earth System Model (1/10 degree by 1/10 degree) to verify whether the method of captures spatiotemporal differences between the altimetry record and the tide gauge record with fidelity.
