X-ray observations of newly discovered Cataclysmic Variables
Abstract
We propose to observe with XMM-Newton 4 cataclysmic variables (CVs) recently detected at high energies by INTEGRAL and subsequently classified as intermediate polars (IPs). The possibility to combine INTEGRAL data with XMM-Newton measurements will allow us to characterise the broad--band emission of these newly discovered sources for the first time. Aim of the proposal is to determine the properties of the emitting regions, to probe the presence of interstellar and/or circumstellar absorption and to study the effects of reprocessing of the hard X-ray emission on the WD surface. In addition, the possibility to study these sources over a wide energy band (~ 0.1--100 keV) is fundamental for the WD mass estimate.
