X-ray follow-up to identify faint X-ray transients
Abstract
We propose to trigger an XMM follow-up observation on known transient sources discovered with INTEGRAL and RXTE, in case of a new outburst. We ask for 30 ks,to get a high-quality X-ray spectrum and search for X-ray pulsations and/or bursts. Their identification is particularly important because the selected targets are suspected to be Very Faint X-ray Transients, X-ray binaries with outburst peak luminosities of 1E34-1E36 erg/s, thought to be the faintest known accretors, with still poorly understood mechanism for their subluminous outbursts. We will benefit also from an already accepted INTEGRAL observation on the same sample of targets, in case of a new outburst, allowing us a broad band simultaneous study, crucial to better understand their nature.
