Warped open strings and their applications to dual models of supersymmetry breaking
Abstract
String theory is the most viable and best developed candidate for a quantum theory of gravity and hence the leading candidate for a truly ultraviolet complete theory. However, matching to experimental data remains an open problem. Within the framework of string theory, warped compactifications are both generic and phenomenologically promising. In this thesis, we will discuss progress towards a phenomenology of these constructions. After a brief introduction to string theory as a whole, we discuss the phenomenology of a class of toy models of warped string compactifications. We then discuss effective field theories for open strings, open strings being a necessary ingredient for realistic models for the string theories considered here. We then end with an application to models of supersymmetry breaking.
