Electrical Carrier Transport and Electronic Structure Studies of Amorphous UO2
Abstract
Traditional solid state neutron detectors suffer from high leakage current and sensitivity to gamma, alpha, and/or proton background. A very different solid state neutron detector based on the conversion of fission fragments into electron-hole pairs from actinide-based semiconductors and insulators would alleviate these noise problems through the application of a very high lower level discriminator setting (e.g., ones to tens of MeV). This talk will provide an overview of preliminary electrical carrier transport and electronic structure measurements on amorphous semiconducting UO2 , in the context of forming resistive and pn junction heterostructures for neutron detection.
