Effect of the Heliospheric Current Sheet on Energetic Particle Propagation at Heliodistances lower than 1 AU
Abstract
Magnetic field and energetic solar particles data from HELIOS 1 and 2 spacecrafts have been used to evaluate the effect of the HCS on solar energetic particle propagation. Experiment 6 onboard HELIOS spacecrafts measured electrons above 300 KeV and protons and alfas above 1 MeV/nucleon. A HCS crossing is selected when a sector boundary is observed in the interplanetary magnetic field considering that is a real sector when the magnetic polarity is conserved at least during 2 days. In this study we focus in a solar energetic particle event when it is observed during a sector boundary crossing. The privileged orbit followed by HELIOS 1 and 2 let us to study events at radial distances lower than 1 UA. This work makes us possible to interpret future measurements with the Energetic Particle Instrument that will be part of the Solar Orbiter payload.
