Evolution of active and polar photospheric magnetic fields during the rise of Cycle 24 compared to previous cycles
Abstract
Longitudinal magnetograms from the NSOś Synoptic Optical Long-term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) Vector Spectro-Magnetograph (VSM) will be used to study the evolution of the photospheric magnetic field during the recent rise of Cycle 24. For comparison, the behavior of the photospheric field during previous cycles will be described using earlier NSO magnetogram data from the Kitt Peak Vacuum Telescope 512-Channel Magnetograph (1974-1993) and Spectromagnetograph (1992-2003) instruments. In particular, correlations between the active-region, high-latitude and polar magnetic fluxes will be investigated and the evolving relationship between the active and polar fields will be discussed.
