Fast Automated Detection of Coronal Mass Ejections relevant for the SWPC on STEREO COR-2 Images
Abstract
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are the primary drivers of space weather; therefore it is crucial to monitor them in near-real time. Using STEREO Beacon data, the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is currently following and extracting properties of CMEs in the COR-2 field of view every 15 minutes; however, this extraction is currently being done manually. We present an evolution of the algorithm showed in the AGU fall 2010 that allows fast and accurate detection and data extraction of simultaneous CMEs from COR-2 images. The proposed algorithm is based on a formal algorithmic definition of a CME. The results can be visualized by the users and are compared to the ones where human intervention played a major role.
