Knowledge Discovery from Secondary Uses of Petascale Scientific Data
Abstract
I will describe the largest data-producing astronomy project that is being proposed for the coming decade: the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). I will highlight the scientific knowledge discovery challenges that are imposed by this 100-petabyte science data repository, including its image archive and science database. Plans for sharing these data with the community, with educators, and with the general public will be presented, with a special focus on the anticipated scientific knowledge discovery potential from the secondary uses of these scientific data by educators, students, and the general public. The primary motivation for these secondary uses is the fact that the volume of data far exceeds the capacity of the primary LSST science collaboration teams, and consequently many more eyes on the data are required in order to maximize the scientific return from this enormous data collection.
