Toward a moist dynamics that takes account of cloud systems
Abstract
I will give an overview of my new review paper with this title. The idea of "moist dynamics" is a simplified way of reasoning or calculating about large-scale phenomena in which moisture is crucial. But the usual simplifying approximations about moist processes - like reduced static stability or convective adjustment ideas - leave no opening for process-level (cloud system) observations. Not all structure is function, but surely some aspects of cloud system structure have functional implications. I discuss a few promising contemporary lines of research, such as estimating the sensitivity matrix or response function of realistic convective cloud fields.
