Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani mechanism
Abstract
The Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani mechanism was discovered in 1970 by Sheldon Lee Glashow, John Iliopoulos, and Luciano Maiani (Glashow et al., 1970). It describes a mechanism to naturally suppress Flavour Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC), as well as ΔS=2 transitions, in weak interactions. Its discovery involved the introduction of a fourth quark flavour, charm, which was unknown at that time.
