To Beyond The Virial Radius Of The X-ray Brightest Galaxy Cluster
Abstract
We present the first results from a large mosaic of Suzaku pointings extending along two arms out to beyond the virial radius of the Perseus cluster, the X-ray brightest cluster of galaxies. Due to Suzaku's low orbit and the low background of its detectors, this observation allows us to determine accurate surface brightness, temperature and entropy profiles out to beyond r_200 for the best cluster target in the sky, with the tightest possible control of all systematic uncertainties. Our results shed new light on the thermodynamics of cluster outskirts, thereby providing a deeper understanding of the distributions of gas and total mass at large radii, which are crucial ingredients for cosmological studies.
