Black Carbon Measurements over the Los Angeles Basin during CalNex
Abstract
A Droplet Measurement Technologies Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) was flown onboard the CIRPAS Twin Otter during the CalNex field campaign in May, 2010. The SP2 utilized both low- and high-gain incandescence channels, providing a single-particle mass detection limit over a relatively wide range of masses. Multiple calibration methods demonstrate the reliability and consistency of the black carbon mass measurements. Spatially and temporally resolved black carbon mass measurements will be reported over the Los Angeles Basin, two of the Basin's outflow regions, and over the southern San Joaquin Valley. Variability in the measurements due to proximity of sources and changing meteorological conditions will be highlighted.
